Oops.. cancel that. If Genting wins the bid for the new IR in Sentosa, we get to dive with WHALE sharks in Singapore!!!
Story here
Q: How do they going to be able to fit the largest shark in the world in some dinky little tank and keep him happy with all the plankton the poor shark can eat?

Reason: thread split from KL Aquarium issue, merged with Sentosa thread

snorkel with 200 marine species? Can't they do that at Tioman? Just set up a fast ferry to take people over.
dive with whale sharks? it doesn't count unless they are free. I'd pity the guy.
dip in an extreme shark pool? Doesn't Underwaterworld have this?
Set up a center for marine education and conservation? This may be useful if done correctly - but do it without the sharks / whale sharks please.

From ST
"The 8 ha oceanarium, called Quest Marine Life Park, will house a staggering 700,000 marine creatures, including bat rays and dolphins.
Visitors will get to snorkel with whale sharks, the world's largest fish, in a 6.6 million-gallon lagoon. Each day, dolphins will frolic in the water canals connecting the resort's attractions,"
ST reports the extreme shark enclosure to be filled with Tiger sharks. Talk about one-upmanship.
Just don't think it would be the same diving with a whale shark in an enclosure, not that I have dived with one in the wild, but to restrict something that big to a tiny tank just isn't right.

Sigh....that will be a few Whale Sharks less in the wild (as far as I know, there is no Whale Shark being breed successfully in captivity yet) come 2009.

Sentosa IR
i'm dismayed to learn that one of the IR proposals includes plans to keep whale sharks and tiger sharks in captivity for the sake of tourism appeal!
anyone has any thoughts on the long-term consequences of confining such beautiful creatures who really should be allowed to roam free?

I think the question here is not merely the long term consequences for the creatures confined but how sustainable the whole project will be.
It is important to ask where are they going to get the specimens? Will they be taken from the wild (where they are already endangered) or thru' exchange and breeding programmes?
Secondly, what happens if the environment is not properly set up and specimen fatality rate is high? How will replacement be done? Refer to above.
This, I think is where the crux of the matter lies. If the project is sustainable and it results in greater public education, then I think it is justifiable. However, this being a commercial profit-making enterprise, somehow I seriously doubt public education will take any priority.

I'm not aware of any breeding programs for Whale Sharks and Tiger Sharks, I'd also expect that the survival chances of these species in a 8 hectare acquarium are better then in the wild. Sadly, I expect that you'll see more biodiveristy at this resort then on the reefs given how we treat reefs and palegics these days.

Ok, this is obviously not a good thing.
I'm not sure if there is a formal channel for public input into the selection but how about Fins get a petition for either - Genting lose the bid if this is included or they remove this idea?
Lobbying worked with HK Disneyland.
