Puerto GaleraLocated on the northern peninsula of Mindoro Island, Puerto Galera (meaning "port of the galleons") is about 160 km from Manila. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful, and a truly international flavour pervades the many beach-side restaurants. Coupled with the rich diversity of marine life and corals, it's no wonder Puerto Galera is one of the most popular diving destinations in the Philippines.

There's a comprehensive variety of dive sites guaranteed to suit all tastes, and the best thing is, most are only a few minutes away from the beach. There are gentle slopes and shallow coral gardens for novice divers and snorkellers, exciting drift dives along walls and pinnacles for adrenalin seekers, and deep and challenging sites — including a few deep wrecks — suitable for technical divers. The extensive range of sites and training facilities at Puerto Galera makes it a great place to learn recreational and technical diving, as well as achieve professional qualifications.

Although primarily a diving destination, Puerto Galera also has plenty of non-diving attractions. Sporty visitors can explore the jungles by foot or on mountain bikes, or check out the range of watersports including sea kayaking, water-skiing and windsurfing. There's also a nine-hole golf course. Visitors interested in culture can enjoy artifacts dating back to the 9th Century in the Excavation Museum.

Getting there

Many major airlines fly to Manila, the capital of the Philippines. From Manila, Puerto Galera can be reached via a regular bus service to Batangas, after which arrangements can be made for pick-ups to different resorts. The bus journey takes around three to four hours, while the boat ride is about an hour. Alternatively, make prior arrangements with your resort to book a private van (approx. 2 hours) from Manila to one of the beaches in the Batangas area to catch a boat ride directly to your resort.

Dive season

Tropical climate, with the preferred diving conditions occurring from April to September. Typhoon season usually starts at the end of July and lasts to the end of November, which means winds, rain and choppy seas. However, there are enough sheltered areas for year-round diving. A 3 mm suit or equivalent should be sufficient.
