FiNS ARTICLES

PalauThe Republic of Palau is an archipelago comprising over 500 islands, islets and rocky knolls, of which only eight of the islands are inhabited. Three ocean currents converge around these islands, resulting in a rich diversity of marine life; over 1,500 species of fish and 700 species of coral have been recorded. The waters also lay claim to having one of the largest collections of World War II wrecks in Micronesia. Visitors may also like to check out the fresh water "Jellyfish Lake" containing millions of unusually stingless jellyfish.

Other attractions include a museum and the only Shinto Shrine outside Japan, a relic from the Japanese occupation during World War II.

Getting there

There are directs flights from Guam and Manila via Continental Micronesia (a branch of Continental Airlines) to Babelthuap International Airport. You can also catch a direct flight from Taiwan via Far Eastern Air and from Japan via Japan Airlines, or travel via Davao on Asian Spirit Airlines.

Dive season

The warm tropical waters of Palau make diving possible all year round. A 3mm suit or equivalent should be sufficient. The rain tends to fall more heavily between July and October but this isn't necessarily a hindrance. Typhoons are rare here as Palau lies outside the typhoon zone.
