- Micronesia: Destination Micronesia
- (Nov 2007, Vol 6.6)
Chuuk Lagoon is one of the top wreck-diving destinations in the world. Situated in the Caroline Islands, its waters are the resting grounds for over 50 Japanese warships and planes that were bombed and sunk during World War II.
A number of the larger vessels still have their cargo intact — including trucks, tanks and even fighter planes! And as visibility is generally very good, there's always plenty to see. Over the last fifty years, these "victims of war" have been transformed into colourful artificial reefs, attracting a fair amount of marine residents, and the outer walls of the lagoon are great for spotting large pelagics such as sharks.
But be warned - the lagoon has been declared a monument, so don't think of going souvenir-collecting among the wrecks!
Getting there
Continental Micronesia (a branch of Continental Airlines) provides a direct service from Hawaii to Chuuk International Airport. It also flies regularly from Bali, Manila, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, via Guam.
Dive season
The sheltered waters of tropical Chuuk are dive-friendly all year round, but those wishing to avoid the rainy season might want to avoid the July to November period. The average water temperature is 29 degrees Celsius, so a 3mm suit or equivalent should be sufficient.
Document and taxes
US residents need to show proof of US citizenship, while non-US residents will be issued a free 30-day visa on arrival. Departure tax for all international flights is US$15 per passenger.
