MacDive Matchmaker

Saturday, 19th April, 2008 12:48 pm by FiNS Team

MacDiveRealising that his beloved Suunto D9 and Mac computer were having communication issues, Singapore-based Kiwi Nick Shore created MacDive, a free application to help the two get along.

Nick says: “There wasn’t an application that had the functionality I wanted or the look and feel of a Mac application, and I thought it would be easiest to just start from scratch and make the exact app I wanted. Plus, this way I could make it free. I worked on MacDive in my spare time after work. It’s been a real labour of love. I know there are many divers who are also Mac users and who, like me, have been frustrated with the lack of options available for Macs. I hope MacDive will help make them happy.”

While developing MacDive, a number of divers in Singapore loaned him their Suuntos for testing. As a result, the application is currently compatible with the D9, D6, D3, Cobra, Cobra 2, Vyper, Vyper 2, Gekko, Vytec and Mosquito.

Nick plans to continue developing MacDive, adding support for more dive computer brands as well as additional functionality, and he’s keen to receive user feedback on where to take the application next.

At the same time, Nick is working on a project with two programmers and divers from Belgium and Canada to make it easier to develop applications for the majority of dive computers on the market.”First things first, though. I’ve got to get in the water and do some testing of my own!”

Ready, Aim, Fire!

Friday, 11th April, 2008 9:00 pm by FiNS Team

imageNow here’s something that could come in really handy for those of you who are intelligent enough not to want to throw away large amounts of invest money on fancy underwater photography kit, and yet still feel the need to express yourself artistically while submerged, or just want to be the geek-chic-est diver in the water.

The new Underwater Digital Camera Mask from Liquid Image is a simple, yet ingenious, concept — marry a digital camera with a scuba mask and “Bob’s your uncle.” (For you non-British-English speakers, look the phrase up in Wikipedia.) (For those of you who don’t understand the expression and also don’t know what Wikipedia is…never mind.)

Brighter and Better

Wednesday, 6th February, 2008 10:42 pm by FiNS Team

Diverite ExpressDive Rite’s popular LED light is getting a boost. The light now delivers 500 lumens of light (a 67% increase!) in the same package for the same price!

Dive Rite’s popular LED Dive Light delivers 500 lumens of illumination for over 12 hours on eight ordinary AA 1.5V alkaline batteries or AA 1.2V NiMH rechargeable batteries. The light’s design incorporates a unique LED system created especially for divers that delivers an outstanding combination of high light output and very long burn time.

With a brightness equal to 10W HID lights, the durable LEDs offer a 10,000-hour life and also resist breakage. The 6500° Kelvin color temperature provided by the LEDs is whiter than light emitted by HID bulbs. The LED light burns at full brightness for at least 12 hours, and then dims as battery voltage declines, yielding usable light for up to 30 hours.

Sexy (Space) Ship

Monday, 4th February, 2008 4:00 pm by FiNS Team

Sexy SpaceshipFalling somewhat outside the scope of normal dive gear is this new, award-winning concept vehicle dubbed the Volitan from Turkish design company DesignNobis.

Reminiscent more of an X-wing Fighter from the movie Star Wars than a normal boat, this concept craft (meaning it’s just a design, so you can’t actually buy one yet…drat!) is a set of blueprints for a lightweight, futuristic sailing vessel that incorporates solid sails, solar energy and wind power so you can be green and clean, yet oh-so-mean.

An onboard computer (what self-respecting spaceship sailing the seven seas doesn’t have a sophisticated onboard computer, preferably one that speaks to you in a sultry, yet intelligent voice?) controls the upper wings to ensure optimal generation of solar- and wind-derived power without compromising speed and cruising comfort.

Sexy SpaceshipThe computer also stabilises the vehicle in up to 60-knot winds, so you don’t inadvertently end up doing one of those acrobatic Luke-esque manoeuvres that made R2D2 scream like a little girl droid.

The motors on the lower in-water wings also adjust to provide optimal performance and balance, meaning the vessel should be nimble enough to turn on a dime in order to zap unidentified incoming vessels. (No word yet on standard armament configuration, but we’d expect nothing less than precise high-energy particle beam weaponry.)

Sexy SpaceshipNow all we need is someone to come up with a scuba suit based on the chic Darth Vader look and an amphibious assault vehicle that resembles an Imperial Tie Fighter.

Who knew diving could be so much fun?

Sony HC7 HD Video Housing

Friday, 21st December, 2007 2:11 am by FiNS Team

SeaTool for HDR-HC7The Sony HDR-HC7 is the latest generation of High Definition (HD) camcorder, capturing the highest quality HD video possible on MiniDV cassette. The revolutionary Seatool SHV-HC7 underwater housing conforms closely to the HC7 camcorder body, and thus is one of the smallest and lightest underwater video housings ever produced, and is the smallest HD housing on the market.

HD video continues to gain popularity in the consumer market, and the compact, affordable HC7 is Sony’s most recent prosumer camcorder. It features high resolution and breathtaking imagery for both the hobbyist and serious amateur videographer. Paired with the HC7, the new Seatool housing brings underwater HD video to divers in a compact and affordable package.

U-Boat 4U?

Tuesday, 18th December, 2007 1:21 am by FiNS Team

U-Boat If you’re one of those people who has every gadget known to modern diving, or if you’re looking for a really special present for someone who’s got everything, how about a personal UBoat?Say what?

U-Boat Worx, a company based in The Netherlands, has developed personal U-Boats (basically very comfortable submarines) that come in one- and two-seater models. Called C-Questers, these oh-so-cool looking submersibles can dive to 50 metres, hold a steady 1-atmosphere of pressure (meaning no decompression issues) and come packed with safety features like redundant depth control (meaning you can’t sink past 50 metres) and advanced life-support systems (four redundant O2 sensors, redundant fans and CO2 scrubber to keep the air clean).

U-BoatThe CQ1 and CQ2 are stable at the surface and light enough to move around without the need for special support ships, cranes and all the other attendant hassle usually required to have this much fun.Of course, there’s a catch.

In order to pilot one of these Bond-esque babies, you need to take a 4-day course to becomes a certified U-Boat captain. Once certified though, you’re officially a babe/ hunk (depending on your preference) magnet.

Illumination by Dive Rite

Monday, 12th November, 2007 10:36 am by FiNS Team

Have you seen the latest from Dive Rite? The LED 300 Lumen Dive Light is now available in two configurations, both with a level of illumination previously available only in primary canister lights.
Dive Rite

The hand-held configuration delivers a flashlight-sized form-factor, while the corded configuration (featuring a corded light head and separate battery canister) offers a smaller form-factor in your hand and the option of traditional hands-free mounting.

A nice feature of the corded configuration is that simply by adding or removing the cord assembly, the light may be quickly and easy converted between the corded and hand-held configurations. The cord is also available separately for divers who already have an LED 300 Lumen light.
