Turtle Smugglers Nabbed

Kota Kinabalu: Marine police on Monday arrested 19 Chinese nationals who had been poaching Green and Hawksbill turtles near Mantanani Island, off Kota Belud, for over a week.

Although the police only found 78 turtles, all dead except for six, on the boat, it is believed that the fishermen, from Hainan, China, had caught more as they were seen chucking several turtles overboard when being chased by the marine police team. Read more…

Balloon Threat

We received this request for help from Lance Ferris of Sea Bird Rescue, concerning an impending release of 2,000 helium-filled balloons, which have a high probability of ending up in the sea, where they can be mistakenly consumed by sea turtles and other animals, which may lead to their deaths. Devouring Reef Fish Live

In many places in Asia, eager diners can select live reef fish from tanks, which chefs then prepare to order. Steamed with ginger perhaps, or how about with black bean sauce? As appetizing as these dishes are, unfortunately, this practice is literally obliterating reef fish populations worldwide, as demand escalates with increasing wealth in Asia. In Memoriam: Larry Smith

Larry Smith, one of the pioneers of diving and critter-hunting in Asia, passed away recently in Sorong. Along with the rest of the global dive community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Larry’s family and friends, and mourn the loss of such a wonderful person and beloved member of the dive fraternity.

There’s a thread in the FiNS Forum, and our friends at Wetpixel have put together a touching tribute to Larry, with contributions from a number of people. For each one of the comments in the tribute, we’re quite sure there are literally thousands more around the world who share the sense of loss.

Baiji First, Irrawaddy Next?

Only a few months earlier, researchers declared the Baiji, a river dolphin found in China’s Yangtze River, extinct. River dolphins are relatively rare to begin with, and now the spotlight is on the Irrawaddy river dolphin, which also appears in danger of extinction. Read more via National Geographic.
