New 5-Star Hotel in Manado

Koh Tao’s 4th Annual Underwater World Festival

Koh Tao Annual Underwater World FestivalThis year’s event will be held over the weekend of 10-11 February in Thian Org bay. The festival promotes environmental practices, marine conservation, local education and awareness.

Events include a baby turtle release, removal of chemical waste and batteries from around the island, tree plantations, marine mooring installations, and a massive island clean up both underwater and on land.

Other fun-filled events include beauty pageants, competitions and a “Save Our Island and Seas” exhibition by school children of the island.

Rare Shark Video

Check out this video of a frilled shark just sighted in Japanese waters. Frilled sharks are deepwater, prehistoric sharks, so sightings are rare, and they have a bizarre appearance.

Strip-eating Reefs Bare

A new report by the Swiss-based World Conservation Union suggests that reefs in Asia are being strip-mined of fish due to overconsumption by consumers in the Greater China region, with escalating demand for live reef fish being one of the major problems highlighted. The Taiji Twelve

12 dolphins recently captured in Taiji, Japan as part of the annual dolphin hunt are awaiting export to the Dominican Republic. This video documents the brutal annual dolphin hunt, and gives the background behind the international trade in dolphins that funds the practice. The video also highlights the high levels of toxins in the dolphin meat that is sold for consumption in Japan, and the dangers that poses to consumers.
