4-Night Classical Music Dive Cruise on the Great Barrier Reef

Leigh PayneIntroducing a new product on the Australian scuba diving market, courtesy of Diversion Dive Travel — scheduled for 6-10 December 2007, Mike Ball’s Spoilsport, the 24-passenger luxury scuba live-aboard based in Cairns, will be hosting the four-night cruise event ‘Symphony At Sea‘.

This four-night classical music dive cruise to the Northern Great Barrier Reef was created in collaboration with Paradise Concerts, Cairns’s foremost classical music ensemble, and Bob Halstead, well-known diving pioneer and author of the definitive ‘Coral Sea Reef Guide’.

On the ‘Symphony At Sea’ cruise, Spoilsport will be transformed by night from a regular dive boat into a floating concert hall. After sunset, the talented members of Paradise Concerts will perform classical concerts under the stars, right next to the reef. This is the first ever cruise event for music-loving divers to enjoy live recitals of classical music in comfort and style after a day of exploring world-class dive sites. All-inclusive prices start from AUD 1,860.00 per person. Early-bird booking discounts are available only until December 2006.

SpoilsportMike Ball’s Spoilsport is the most award-winning dive boat in Australia. Since her launch in 1989 she received a total of 11 Rodale’s Readers’ Choice awards including Best Liveaboard. Scuba Diving Magazine voted Spoilsport among the Top Ten Liveaboards in 2003. A spacious and stable catamaran, she has comfortable lounge and dining areas and a well-organised dive deck. Two sea level platforms offer easy water access for divers and snorkellers. All cabins are twin-share with private bathrooms, and many have ocean views. After 3 full dive days along the famous Ribbon Reefs, a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef will take passengers back to Cairns.

Paradise Concerts was founded in 2003 by Kirtley Leigh and Mark Paine. Their musical careers have taken them around the world, from the London Chamber Symphony and the Hong Kong Philharmonic to the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. They have now settled down with their families in Cairns. Their concert events — often outdoors in beautiful rainforest settings — raised the bar for classical concert recitals and chamber music performances in Far North Queensland. ??Bob Halstead is well known in the diving world as an explorer, prolific author and columnist, as well as the first live-aboard operator in Papua New Guinea. He also taught Leigh and Mark to scuba dive. Most people don’t know that Bob is also a talented musician himself.
