Bug-Eyed Lens

Posted by Takaji Ochi on Feb 16, 2009 in Blog, Photo/Video

Hi everyone. This is my first post to the FiNS Blog. I will try to post often, and keep you updated with information from Japan.

For my first post, I’d like to show you a unique lens system recently developed in Japan for underwater photography. This lens is called a “mushi no me” lens (虫の目レンズ) in Japanese, which means “bug-eyed lens”. This type of lens was developed and used by a Japanese photographer who specialises in taking photos of insects.

The lens allows you to focus really closely, and keep depth of focus far to the background, so it simulates what an insect’s point of view might be.

A company called Proof in Japan has recently designed a port system for this lens that works with the Sea & Sea housing for the Canon 40D camera.

I just got this, so I haven’t had a chance to use it underwater yet. I believe this lens will become popular among underwater photographers, and I will post sample photos after I get a chance to use this lens.

  1. Hi

Would it be possible to know how much does it cost to get a Bug Eye?

And who can I contact to learn more about it?

  2. Hey Jeff,

It’s probably best if you contact Takaji through his website. I know he’s away for a few weeks though, so he might take a while to get back to you

    Cheers,

    Tony
